Why is Peace Important for India and Pakistan

On both sides of the border, a culture of hypernationalism and jingoism prevails. This culture constantly dismisses the idea of peacebuilding. While the popular narrative on both sides is that “peace has been one-sided”, there is also an understanding that peacebuilding has no significant benefit for both countries. Here, we list four reasons why peacebuilding is significant:

1. Economic Growth: Peace is vital for both India and Pakistan’s economic development. If they are at peace, they can focus on important issues such as building a robust economy. A peace treaty between India and Pakistan can lead to increased trade, investment opportunities, and economic growth. The trade between the two countries may be more egalitarian, less discriminatory, and cost-effective as compared to trade with other, particularly western, countries.

2. Security: The conflict between India and Pakistan has been ongoing for decades, leading to tension and insecurity in the region. A peaceful environment will ensure safety and security for the citizens of both countries.

3. Improved Diplomacy: Through peaceful negotiations, India and Pakistan can settle their disputes and conflicts without resorting to violent measures. This can lead to mutual respect and cooperation, improving diplomatic relationships between the two nations.

4. Development: A peaceful environment will enable India and Pakistan to concentrate on developing their infrastructure, education, healthcare, and other necessary sectors. This will lead to a prosperous future for both nations.

In conclusion, peace is essential for India and Pakistan to improve their economic growth, security, diplomatic relationships, and development.
